In Sweden, the Stanley Cup is used as baptismal font for baby’s christening

PITEA, Sweden - Tomas Holmstrom had his day with the Stanley Cup on Friday, and he let his cousin use it as a baptismal font for a christening.

Holmstrom suggested the idea to his cousin, Robert Sundstrom, who baptized his seven-week-old daughter Alva Felicia during a private ceremony outside Holmstrom’s hometown of Pitea in northern Sweden.

“Tomas came up with the idea when we were sitting in his summer cabin kitchen a week ago,” Sundstrom said. “Me and my wife thought it would be fun to christen our daughter in such a priceless object.”

Penguins’ Goligoski sets AHL record, earns recall to Stanley Cup Finals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … An official scoring correction made by the American Hockey League on Monday has given Wilkes-Barre/Scranton rookie Alex Goligoski his 26th point of the 2008 Calder Cup Playoffs, the most ever by an AHL defenseman in a single postseason.

Goligoski should have been credited with an assist on the first Penguins goal in Sunday’s 4-2 loss to Chicago in Game 2 of the Calder Cup Finals. The AHL has reviewed the video and adjusted the scoring appropriately. Goligoski now shows two assists for Sunday’s game and six points (1g, 5a) in the first two games of the series, figuring in on all six of his team’s goals in the Finals.

Red Wings players say that their families were a big part of Stanley Cup win

PITTSBURGH - Their names will never be etched on the Stanley Cup but the Detroit Red Wings needed their quiet contributions to reach the top.

So it goes for the family and close friends of a professional hockey player. They are the people in the background providing support during injuries, slumps and losing streaks and the ones who keep the household running during long road trips.

The players recognize the importance of these people more than anyone, which explains the mix of tears and jubilation that was on display after Detroit’s Cup-clinching victory over Pittsburgh on Wednesday night. Once the trophy had been presented and the Red Wings had posed for a photo, family and friends were allowed on the ice at Mellon Arena to share in the celebration.
