B-Mets Fall In Series Opener

Caleb Stewart homered, but the Akron Aeros scored three times with two outs for a 5-1 win over the Binghamton Mets at Canal Park Friday. Binghamton has lost two in a row.

B-Mets (55-51) lefthander Michael Antonini retired the first five to face him in his Double-A debut before allowing three straight to reach with two out in the second, with Brandon Pinckney driving in a run with a bloop single. Young Penguins behind in a series for first time this playoff year

DETROIT - The Pittsburgh Penguins are new to this whole trailing business.

Down 1-0 to the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup final, all eyes are on the young Penguins to see how they respond in Game 2 Monday night.

They went up 3-0 in all three previous series, never once feeling like there weren’t in control. They trailed for only 115:37 out of 847:10 of total playing time before the Cup final, down in the score just 13.6 per cent of the time. Being behind the eight-ball is unchartered territory.

Rockford ties series with crucial 3-2 win

Rockford, Ill.- The Rockford IceHogs have made the West Division Finals a best-of-three series with a big 3-2 win at the Rockford MetroCentre over the Chicago Wolves.

With two of the final three games in the series scheduled for the Allstate, the next step is to figure out how to win in Rosemont where the IceHogs are without a victory in six attempts.

Martin St. Pierre put the IceHogs up 1-0 in the first. The IceHogs center scored his second goal of the postseason at 16:27 in the first on a power play when he picked up the loose puck on a rebound and shot it over Ondrej Pavelec. The Wolves goaltender was sprawled on the ice after stopping a shot from Derek Nesbitt. Petri Kontiola also had the assist.

Dallas Stars emerge from Shark Tank with 2-0 lead in best-of-seven series

DALLAS - As strange as it sounds, the Dallas Stars might have preferred staying on the West Coast even though they are coming home with a 2-0 series lead.

It’s San Jose that instead really needed to escape the Shark Tank.

What about home-ice advantage? Well, there doesn’t seem to be any whenever the Sharks and Stars play, whether in the regular season or the playoffs. The home team has won three of the past 16 games dating to last season.

Syracuse takes 3-2 series lead with overtime victory over Manitoba

WINNIPEG - Derek MacKenzie wasn’t interested in discussing his overtime goal Saturday night - he wanted instead to rave about his star teammate.

MacKenzie’s goal 10:54 into overtime lifted the Syracuse Crunch to a 3-2 victory over the Manitoba Moose on Saturday, and a 3-2 lead in their American Hockey League North Division semifinal.

MacKenzie took a perfect pass from Derick Brassard, raced to the front of the crease, outguessed Schneider and backhanded the puck into the net. After the game, MacKenzie lauded Brassard for setting up the game winner.

Morrow’s overtime goal lifts Stars past Sharks 3-2 in series opener

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Their dressing room is small and spare, and the teal-coloured crowd despises them. Yet the Dallas Stars feel right at home these days in the Shark Tank.

Even when they gave up a tying goal late in regulation Friday night, the Stars seemed more comfortable and capable than their hosts. Brenden Morrow then proved it with a game-winner that got Dallas off to another fine playoff start.

Morrow scored his second goal 4:39 into overtime, and the Stars opened their second-round series with a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks.

Crunch reclaim series lead in OT

WINNIPEG, MB. — For the fourth time in five games this series, the Moose and Crunch required extra time to decide a winner Saturday night. 11 minutes into the extra frame, Crunch forward Derek MacKenzie beat Moose goalie Cory Schneider to give his club a 3-2 OT win and 3-2 series lead heading into Monday’s Game 6 in Syracuse.

Six minutes and two Moose shots into the game, enforcers Mike Brown and Derek Dorsett got caught up between the benches and decided to drop the gloves. Despite tumbling to the ice a few times, the pair appeased the crowd by keeping the fight going until the linesmen jumped in to break up the scrap. Brown and Dorsett earned five minutes each for fighting, but Brown wouldn’t be alone long in the penalty box, as Moose forward Alexandre Bolduc took a goaltender interference penalty only 23 seconds later. Although the Crunch assumed a 5-2 shot lead on the powerplay, the club was unable to solve goalie Cory Schneider.
