4 young stars traded by Rangers, Blue Jackets

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -The Blue Jackets traded enigmatic offensive star Nikolai Zherdev and center Dan Fritsche to the New York Rangers for defensemen Christian Backman and Fedor Tyutin on Wednesday.

Zherdev gives the Rangers one of the NHL’s best one-on-one players, but also a Russian right winger who has frequently fallen into disfavor with management and teammates. He had a career-high 61 points last season with 26 goals and 35 assists, second on the Columbus team to captain Rick Nash.

Jagr: Rangers are No. 1 option for next season

GREENBURGH, N.Y. (AP) -Jaromir Jagr entered his season-ending exit interview not knowing if it would be his last act with the New York Rangers.

Two days after the Rangers were eliminated with an overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round of the playoffs, Jagr stood in front of his stall Tuesday and did his best to explain what the future holds.

Nearly a half-hour later, there were still no concrete answers from the free-agent-to-be.

Jagr cloudy on Rangers future, but expects to keep playing

PITTSBURGH - Maybe it was Jaromir Jagr’s last game with the New York Rangers. It almost certainly wasn’t Jagr’s last hockey game.

Jagr, a five-time NHL scoring champion, is facing an uncertain future following the Rangers’ season-ending 3-2 overtime loss to Pittsburgh on Sunday in Game 5 of their second-round playoff series.

While the 36-year-old Jagr’s contract carries into next season only if he wins the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoffs MVP, almost an impossibility now that the Rangers have been eliminated, he plans to keep playing hockey.

Frustrated Penguins look to regain game, eliminate Rangers from playoffs

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Penguins answered the New York Rangers’ desperation with frustration, and with a predictable result.

Sidney Crosby looked unhappy and exasperated during the Penguins’ first playoff loss in eight games, their 3-0 defeat to the Rangers on Thursday night in Game 4 of the second-round series.

Evgeni Malkin, the Penguins’ best player so far with the possible exception of goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, was so off his game after missing a penalty shot that he tried kicking out Paul Mara’s skates near the end of the game. Mara called it a “classless act by a superstar.”

Penguins coach Therrien angry that Rangers think Crosby is diving

PITTSBURGH - Only one game into the NHL’s Eastern Conference semifinal between the New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins and already the heat is rising.

Penguins head coach Michel Therrien came out swinging after Saturday’s practice, saying he was tired of hearing from the Rangers camp what he believed were insinuations that Sidney Crosby was diving to draw penalties.

“Enough is enough, that’s enough,” Therrien fumed ahead of Sunday’s Game 2.

Embellished or not, Rangers must bounce back

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Losing a three-goal lead was bad enough, losing the game was worse still. If they lose the series, this one will be very hard for the New York Rangers to forget.

Especially losing to a Kid some of them believe is as good an actor as he is a hockey player, and that must mean Sidney Crosby is the Brad Pitt of Pittsburgh.

A combination of the Penguins’ youthful determination and the Rangers’ inability to keep playing the way they did in building a 3-0 lead led to a 5-4 Pittsburgh comeback victory Friday night in their second-round playoff series opener, one that puts substantial pressure on the Rangers going into Game 2 on Sunday.

Avery and Rangers shake off Brodeur and Devils

NEW YORK (AP) -Sean Avery easily brushed off Martin Brodeur’s snub in the handshake line following the New York Rangers’ five-game, opening-round playoff win against the New Jersey Devils.

After all, there will be more goalies to antagonize in what he and the Rangers hope will be a long run through the Stanley Cup playoffs.

“We just wanted to come out and win the series,” Avery said after the Rangers’ 5-3 road win Friday night finished off the Devils in the Eastern Conference matchup. “We played well as a team, and it’s Step One of four steps.”
