Wolves Nip Albany’s Playoff Hopes 50-33

MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Wolves broke a tie game by scoring 23 points in the fourth quarter to beat the Albany Conquest 50-33 Friday night at Verizon Wireless Arena.

Albany won the coin toss and elected to kickoff first. Manchester made them pay as QB James Pinkney took the first offensive snap of the game and found WR Bradley Chavez wide open deep down the field for a 27-yard TD pass and a 7-0 lead. On Albany’s first possession, DE Larry McSwain sacked Albany QB Dan Cole, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Chavez and returned 20 yards for a touchdown and a 13-0 lead. The Conquest then escaped a fourth down situation as Cole went deep to WR Antwun Williams for a 42-yard TD pass and a 13-6 game after the first quarter.

Young Penguins behind in a series for first time this playoff year

DETROIT - The Pittsburgh Penguins are new to this whole trailing business.

Down 1-0 to the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup final, all eyes are on the young Penguins to see how they respond in Game 2 Monday night.

They went up 3-0 in all three previous series, never once feeling like there weren’t in control. They trailed for only 115:37 out of 847:10 of total playing time before the Cup final, down in the score just 13.6 per cent of the time. Being behind the eight-ball is unchartered territory.

Sharks fire Ron Wilson after early playoff exit

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -Although the San Jose Sharks ended another disappointing playoff run last week, coach Ron Wilson was optimistic about his future. After all, his Sharks had done just about everything a good team can do, except win a Stanley Cup.

Wilson’s only glaring failure still cost him his job Monday.

General manager Doug Wilson fired his coach after the Sharks followed another outstanding regular season with yet another early playoff exit.

Rookie forward Darren Helm surprise contributor in Red Wings’ playoff march

DETROIT - The possibility that he might get his name etched on the Stanley Cup as a member of the Detroit Red Wings this spring blows Darren Helm’s mind.

The 21-year-old forward from St. Andrews, Man., had never played an NHL game before March 13, yet, here he is strapping on the pads in the Western Conference final.

“I didn’t think I’d be in this spot, so I’m pretty happy I’m here,” he said after pulling off his practice sweater and before unlacing his skates.

Houston Aeros Playoff Recap: April 29

HOUSTON, Texas - The Houston Aeros returned home last week with a 1-1 series tie in the West Division Semifinals but are now packing their bags for the summer rather than the next round. The Aeros dropped all three home contests last week and were eliminated 4-1 in the first round of the Calder Cup Playoffs.

After seeing how tight the division was in the regular season everyone knew it wouldn’t be an easy task to win in the playoffs. The Rockford IceHogs bested the Aeros with three of the five games decided by only one goal, including the longest 0-0 tied game in league history. Rockford will go on to play Chicago in the second round beginning this week.
