Toronto Maple Leafs add pre-season game that will be free for fans

TORONTO - The Toronto Maple Leafs might play their loudest home game of the season before the exhibition schedule even comes to an end.

The Maple Leafs have added an extra pre-season game to their schedule and will be giving away all of the tickets for free. The game will be played on Sept. 22 against the Buffalo Sabres. Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment is hoping that a different audience will be able to attend the game and create a lively atmosphere.

Leafs acquire Ryan Hollweg from Rangers

TORONTO (AP) -The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired forward Ryan Hollweg from the New York Rangers for a 2009 fifth-round draft pick on Monday.

The 25-year-old Hollweg had two goals and two assists and 96 penalty minutes in 70 games for the Rangers.

He has five goals and seven assists in 200 career NHL games, all with the Rangers.

He was New York’s eighth-round choice, 238th overall, in the 2001 draft.

Canadiens Trade Grabovski to Maple Leafs

MONTREAL, Quebec - Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey today announced the acquisition of defenceman Greg Pateryn along with the Toronto Maple Leafs’ second round pick in 2010 in return for forward Mikhail Grabovski.

Pateryn, 18, was selected by Toronto in the fifth round, 128th overall, in the 2008 National Hockey League Entry Draft. In 2007-2008, his first season in the United States Hockey League, the 6′2″, 212-pound defenceman led all Ohio Jr. Blue Jackets defencemen with 27 points (3 goals, 24 assists) and finished first on the team with 145 penalty minutes in 60 games. The native of Royal Oak, Michigan native was also named to the Eastern Division Team in the USHL Prospects / All-Star Game and received USHL Defensive Player of The Week honours in March.

Blast from the past, Maple Leafs bring back goalie Curtis Joseph

TORONTO - The Toronto Maple Leafs have turned to a familiar face to fill their backup goaltending vacancy.

Curtis Joseph has returned to the Maple Leafs after signing a US$700,000, one-year deal.

The 41-year-old enjoyed his finest seasons in blue and white, twice leading Toronto to the Eastern Conference final between 1998 and 2002.

Joseph broke into tears at a news conference when he announced he was leaving the Leafs to sign with Detroit in July 2002. He returns now to serve as Vesa Toskala’s backup.

Leafs to buyout Tucker; place Raycroft on waivers

TORONTO (AP) -The Toronto Maple Leafs plan to buyout forward Darcy Tucker.

Maple Leafs general manager Cliff Fletcher informed Tucker of the decision on Tuesday. The player’s agent, Carlos Sosa, told The Canadian Press the team would make the move official Wednesday, and Tucker would be an unrestricted free agent 24 hours later.

“We’ve been ready for this for a while. It is a business,” Sosa said.

Tucker, a 12-year veteran, has three years left on his contract and will be owed two-thirds of it - or $6 million - paid back over a six-year term by the Leafs. He signed a four-year extension with the team in February 2007, and had 18 goals and 34 points last season.

Toronto Maple Leafs select Hayes, Stefanovich on second day of NHL draft

OTTAWA - Jimmy Hayes will have no shortage of NHL connections to tap into as he strives to make the Toronto Maple Leafs in future years.

The winger from Dorchester, Mass., was taken 60th overall by the Maple Leafs at the NHL draft on Saturday. He had originally been ranked higher but slipped a little after an off year with Lincoln in the United States Hockey League.

Hayes’ mother is cousins with St. Louis Blues forward Keith Tkachuk and former NHLer Tom Fitzgerald and he’s spent time around both guys while growing up.

Maple Leafs trade up to select physical defenceman Luke Schenn

OTTAWA - The Toronto Maple Leafs were in unfamiliar territory when they drafted Luke Schenn.

The bruising defenceman was selected by the Maple Leafs with the fifth pick on Friday night, making him the team’s highest-drafted player since Scott Thornton was taken third in 1989.

Toronto has missed the playoffs the last three seasons and Schenn will now be seen as one of the players who can help turn the franchise around in years to come.

Canadiens get permission to talk to Leafs’ Sundin

OTTAWA (AP) -Of all the trades completed at the NHL draft on Friday, 12 involving first-round selections, there was one blossoming deal that caught everyone’s attention.

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin could be on the move, and his destination might be Montreal.

The Maple Leafs give the archrival Canadiens permission to negotiate a contract with Sundin, who can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. That’s the deadline the Canadiens have to lure the Maple Leafs’ career goal leader before he can negotiate with any other team.
