Moose acquire Matt Stephenson

The Manitoba Moose, the AHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks, announced today they have acquired defenceman Matt Stephenson from the Iowa Chops of the American Hockey League.

Stephenson, 24, appeared in five games with the Iowa Stars last season where he collected two penalty minutes. He also played in 40 games with the St. Cloud State Huskies where the senior had two goals and nine assists for 11 points and 46 penalty minutes. Stephenson also served as Huskies team captain in the final season of his four-year career at St. Cloud State. In 141 career games with the Huskies, the Midland, ON native scored seven goals and 44 assists for 51 points and 159 penalty minutes.

Penguins Acquire Richmond from Chicago

WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired the rights to defenseman Danny Richmond from the Chicago Blackhawks for the rights to center Tim Brent, it was announced on Thursday by Assistant General Manager Chuck Fletcher.

Richmond, 23, split last season between the Blackhawks and Rockford IceHogs (AHL). He was scoreless in seven games with Chicago, and recorded 14 points (2+12) and 156 penalty minutes in 40 games with Rockford.

Penguins acquire rights to defenseman Richmond

PITTSBURGH (AP) -The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired the rights to defenseman Danny Richmond in exchange for the rights to Tim Brent on Thursday.

The 23-year-old Richmond appeared in seven games with the Chicago Blackhawks last season. He had two goals and 12 assists in 40 games with the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League.

The Chicago native was originally drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2003 draft.

Columbus Blue Jackets Acquire Conditional Draft Pick from Anaheim Ducks in Exchange for Forward Joak

Syracuse, NY (July 15, 2008) - The Syracuse Crunch announced today that the Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired a conditional draft pick from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for forward Joakim Lindstrom.

Lindstrom, 24, appeared in 49 games with the Crunch last season and led the team in scoring, collecting 25 goals, 35 assists and 68 penalty minutes. He also appeared in 25 games with Columbus last year, registering 3 goals, 4 assists and 14 penalty minutes.

Leafs acquire Ryan Hollweg from Rangers

TORONTO (AP) -The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired forward Ryan Hollweg from the New York Rangers for a 2009 fifth-round draft pick on Monday.

The 25-year-old Hollweg had two goals and two assists and 96 penalty minutes in 70 games for the Rangers.

He has five goals and seven assists in 200 career NHL games, all with the Rangers.

He was New York’s eighth-round choice, 238th overall, in the 2001 draft.

Lightning Acquire Matt Carle, Ty Wishart from San Jose

The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired defensemen Matt Carle and Ty Wishart along with San Jose’s first-round pick in 2009 and its fourth-round pick in 2010 in exchange for defensemen Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich today, owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie announced. “We are thrilled to add a player with Matt’s abilities to our roster as we continue our plan of retooling and refinishing the Lightning team,” said Vice President of Hockey Operations Brian Lawton. “He quarterbacked the number one power play unit in the NHL two seasons ago as a rookie and he clearly will add speed and skill to our lineup. He fits with our plan of trying to getting younger and better.”

Sharks acquire top defenseman Boyle from Lightning

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -Although Dan Boyle felt betrayed when the Tampa Bay Lightning decided to trade him, the standout defenseman is feeling much better about it after landing with the San Jose Sharks.

The Sharks acquired Boyle from Tampa Bay in a four-player deal Friday, trading defenseman Matt Carle and top prospect Ty Wishart to the Lightning to add their second star defenseman in two days.

The Sharks also picked up veteran defenseman Brad Lukowich, one of Boyle’s closest friends, while giving up a first-round pick in 2009 and a fourth-round choice in 2010. San Jose then made room for its new talent and replenished its draft stock by trading defenseman Craig Rivet to Buffalo for two second-round picks.

Buffalo Sabres acquire defenceman Craig Rivet from San Jose Sharks

BUFFALO - The Buffalo Sabres have added some depth to their blue-line.

The NHL team acquired defenceman Craig Rivet and a seventh-round draft pick from the San Jose Sharks on Friday for a pair of second-round choices. “We are very excited to add such a quality veteran player to our roster,” Sabres GM Darcy Regier said in a statement. “He is a great character player that will provide our club added leadership and experience.”

Rivet spent parts of the last two seasons in San Jose but became expendable after the Sharks signed Rob Blake on Thursday and brought over Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich in a trade from Tampa on Friday.

Lightning Acquire Defenseman Janne Niskala from Flyers

TAMPA BAY - The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired defenseman Janne Niskala (YAH-nee NIHS-kah-lah) from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a sixth-round choice in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, it was announced by owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie.

Niskala, 26, was acquired by Philadelphia last week from Nashville for forward Triston Grant and a seventh-round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. The 6-foot, 200-pound native of Vasteras, Sweden recorded 19 goals, 44 points and 81 penalty minutes in 80 regular season games for the Predators’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals, this past season. He led Admirals defensemen in goals (19, second among AHL defensemen) and points (44, tied for 11th among AHL defensemen). Though born in Sweden, Niskala is a Finnish citizen and was the leading scorer among defensemen for bronze medal-winning Team Finland at the 2008 IIHF World Championships.
